Mining Stones in Thailand: An Overview
Thailand has a long history of stone mining, with a diverse range of minerals and gemstones extracted across the country. From limestone and granite to precious stones like sapphires and rubies, the industry plays a significant role in both local economies and international trade.
One of the most notable areas for stone mining is the Chanthaburi-Trat region, known for its gemstone deposits. Rubies and sapphires mined here are highly sought after in global markets. The extraction process often involves both industrial mining and small-scale artisanal operations, providing livelihoods for thousands of workers. 
Limestone is another key resource, primarily quarried in regions like Saraburi and Nakhon Sawan. Used in construction, cement production, and agriculture, limestone mining supports Thailand’s infrastructure development. Meanwhile, granite and marble reserves, particularly in the north and northeast, are utilized for decorative and architectural purposes.
Despite its economic benefits, stone mining in Thailand faces challenges. Environmental concerns, including land degradation and water pollution, have prompted calls for stricter regulations. Illegal mining operations, particularly in gemstone-rich areas, also pose issues for sustainability and labor rights.
